God with Us

December 16, 2010

O Come, O Come, Emmanuel
And ransom captive Israel
That mourns in lonely exile here
Until the Son of God appear.

This Christmas carol about God coming to earth to be with us is one of my favorites. An Eternal God entering time and space to be with His creation provides a mystery worthy of my contemplation! A Holy God had to come to earth to pay the debt I could not pay. But I think He came as well "to be with us". The apostle Mark tells me,

He [Jesus] appointed twelve — designating them apostles — that they might be with him. . . (Mark 3:14 NIV)

When I have "been with Jesus" my life is different in ways observable to others. The same was true with the Jesusí disciples. People saw these ordinary men and marveled.

When they saw the courage of Peter and John and realized that they were unschooled, ordinary men, they were astonished and they took note that these men had been with Jesus. (Acts 4:13 NIV)

Being with Jesus can have astonishing outcomes on regular people like you and me. Will you join me this Christmas season not only in singing about Jesus but choosing to be with Him?

Sharing the journey with you,

P.S. This will be the last lesson of 2010. Celebrating the Christmas season, may we know the presence of the Savior and the joy of the resurrection as we journey into the year 2011.
